The Crack is Where the Light Gets In (2021)
The Crack is Where the Light Gets In 2021 is an ephemeral project, using natural eucalyptus matter and raw clay. The project explores the impact of colonisation on the Victorian bushland, particularly the Warburton area, where much of the natural eucalyptus forrest was cleared in the 1930s and replaced with the uniformity of European tree plantations. The stark white eucalyptus structures sit ghostly amongst the natural browns and greens of the forest. The sunlight, shadows and cracked clay pieces create a sense of something temporary and what was once there. The clay is repelled by the natural eucalyptus matter representing nature reclaiming. The name of the project is derived from the lyrics of Leonard Cohen and the Rumi quote “the wound is where the light enters.” As such, the project embodies seeking hope where there is suffering and destruction. Where there is a ‘crack’ there is opportunity for repentance and resurrection.
